Why you should be certified as a tradie?

22/09/2021

Becoming a certified tradie is one of the best ways to start building and construction work.

It lets you “earn while you learn” and even advance your career further down the track.

In this article we talk about some of the reasons why becoming certified as a tradie is so important.

What is a certified tradie?

A certified tradie has a certificate in a trade such as carpentry, plumbing or plant operation.

For example, a carpenter with a Certificate III in Carpentry (CPC30220) would be a certified carpenter.

While it’s possible to work in carpentry without the certificate, it’s much harder to get a job because you will be competing against candidates that have a certificate.

Getting certified as a tradie is not just earning a piece of paper.

Becoming a certified tradie gives you the skills to do high quality trades work and the confidence in your abilities.

It also lets you take further steps to get even better jobs and increase your earnings, like getting your builders registration aka builders licence.

Why You Should Become a Certified Tradie

Earn more

Did you know that certified tradies can earn more than university graduates?

A recent study found that younger men who scored low ATAR scores can earn more by doing a trade than a university degree.

The report just goes to show that university is not the only option, especially if your interest and skills lie in trades.

Get paid

While it’s tempting to dive straight into a job and start earning money, getting a trade certificate pays off.

This is because you can actually earn money while completing your certificate.

To get a trade certificate III, you become an apprentice and do paid work for an employer.

Unlike university, you don’t have to put your life on hold while you get your qualification.

Once you complete your studies and become a certified tradie, you could continue working for the same employer except you’d earn a higher rate.

Get funding

Not only are trade certificates cheaper than university degrees, many of them are government funded.

If you are an Australian citizen you might be able to get a big discount on your certificate or maybe even do it for free.

As one of the biggest building schools in Victoria and Australia, we are experts in understanding the different government funding options available.

To find out if you’re eligible for funding, give us a call and one of our course advisors can help you out.

Get registered

Once you get certified with a certificate III, you’ll be qualified to work on the tools doing hands on building work.

But if you want to do jobs that pay more than 10 thousand dollars, or if you want to get off the tools and become a supervisor, you will need to become a registered builder.

By getting certified, you open up the possibility of getting you builders registration.

How to go from certified tradie to registered builder

To become a registered builder, you’ll have to complete an application to the Victorian Building Authority.

It’s a tough application, but there are a couple of ways that you can improve your chances of success.

By doing a Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) (CPC40120) you’ll learn everything you need to know to run your own business or work as a supervisor in construction.

With these skills under your belt, you’ll be much more likely to pass the VBA application and become a registered builder.

But just to make it even more certain that you pass, we offer free builder registration mentoring with one of our expert builder trainers.

If you want to take your career to an even greater level, you might choose to do a Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) (CPC50220) .

While the Cert 4 teaches you the skills you need for low-rise residential buildings, the diploma gives you skills to do mid-rise residential buildings.

Become a certified tradie

With so many reasons to become a certified tradie, it’s hard to see why anyone would choose not to get a certificate.

It lets you earn money as an apprentice while you get your qualification, and even lets you do other certificates and diplomas in the future.

One of the main reasons our students get certified is so that they can get their builders registrations and start earning some serious cash.
