So you want to become a bricklayer. The other kids in school dreamed about growing up and becoming an astronaut, a secret agent or a dragon, but you had your sights set on a different horizon. You’d go to sleep at night dreaming about bricks and wake up in your backyard surrounded by a trowel, spirit level, and fully functional three-story brick cubby house.

Okay maybe you didn’t grow up dreaming about becoming a bricklayer, but maybe it’s something that’s become appealing to you as you’ve grown

up and found yourself seeking a career. Maybe you don’t actually know what’s involved with becoming a bricklayer in the first place. Are you even applicable to become qualified? Well, here’s what you need to know to help you make up your mind.

Frank Bricklayer 2How old do I have to be to begin a bricklaying apprenticeship?

If you are at a VCAL or VET level of education, then you are old enough to start your apprenticeship. At this particular stage, you will undergo both practical work under the tutelage of a current bricklayer who employs apprentices, as well as structured training at a registered training organisation such as Builders Academy. With various classrooms located across Victoria, as well as our online classroom, you’ll have no trouble finding one of our locations that’s accessible to you.

Will I be able to make a career out of bricklaying?

Absolutely. Not only has Australia always been in demand of qualified bricklayers, but at the rate our economy and population are growing, there will always be work to be done. Whether this be in the form of new housing projects, commercial buildings or civil jobs, every state inevitably needs professional bricklayers.

There are also ample opportunities for career progression with the assistance of relevant courses on offer at Builders Academy. Having helped many bricklayers expand their skillsets and gain the necessary qualifications to start their own bricklaying business, for example, you too can make a very profitable career out of such a trade.

What else do I need to know?

Bricklaying apprenticeships are recognised throughout Australia as a national qualification. This means that even if you become registered in Victoria, you have the flexibility to go and work in Sydney or Perth should you choose to.
